THE EMPRESS

Symbolic Representation

Wearing a robe with pomegranate patterns as design, The Empress sits in a field of ripe wheat. She is adorned by a crown of stars, a rod and a heart-shaped shield with the symbol for Venus drawn on it.

Tarot Story

Knowing all he wanted to know, as the Fool marches forward, he is too eager to see his future turn into a reality from a dream. Occupied with these thoughts, the Fool meets the Empress. With golden hair and a tiara of stars, she rests back on her throne in a pomegranate patterned gown, surrounded by a wealth of wheat grain and lush green gardens.

Bowing down, the Fool tells his story to her. After listening to him calmly, she gives a motherly smile and advices him "Like newly planted grain or a child in the womb, a new life, a new love, and a new creation is fragile and needs love and attention. Only this will bring it to fruition." This enlightens the Fool to the thought that his future will take time to build, and thanking the Empress, he continues on his way.

Tarot Connotation

The Empress is a founder and creator, of life, love, art or business. She is the one who gives all the ideas a form; the reason why she is represented by the symbol of Venus, the goddess of love and other beautiful things. She is the donor of worldly offerings, but at the same time, can withhold it all if angry.

The Empress is a Mother, or a person with mother like qualities, patient, loving, bountiful and generous. If the reader is seeing the seeker as The Empress, then they are presently keeping themselves in the position of a mother hen. They are concerned about their family, new business, new creation or new love.

This also means that the seeker gets to face the negative side of the card too. The Empress can be the worst aspects of a doting mother too. She can be possessively jealous of those who would want to take away their child.

This negative facet of the card warns the seeker that if they want their new romance, new career, new business, new creation to bloom and grow successfully, they have to baby it but at the same time, be willing to let go of it when it is ready.
